May 26th  was an historic date for Portland, Oregon.

Global Family Net Work and Hungry Mob Productions teamed up with Bossup, Inc. and Dead Prez to hold the Back 2 Reality concert at the Wonder Ballroom.  It was a magnificent success on many levels. Foremost, over $5000 was raised to send donated computers to Burundi and Rwanda. Global Family Net Work founders, Morgan Delaney and Michael Crenshaw were successful in getting artists Dead Prez, Umi and Mike Flo to come to Portland and support the cause. From the 700 fans, to the artists and club management, everyone had a blast and knew that this was a night to be remembered. The energy of the crowd was phenomenal and every act responded with dynamic and energetic performances.  The United Spitters Association brought their own crowd of  fellow Jefferson High students and put on a good show. Cool Nutz and Syndel delivered a high energy set and Hungry Mob did  what they do best, representing live conscious Hip-Hop. Finally Umi and Dead Prez really brought the house down with some of the best socially relevant music produced today.

For me the highlight of the weekend was traveling with Dead Prez, Umi and Mike Flo.  We got them to Jefferson High for a speaking engagement, up to Seattle for a community event, and back to Portland.  In the process we were able to get to know one another a little bit and I felt lucky to be able to bond with cats making moves on the level that they do.  It was clear to me that the ideas and lyrical content expressed in their music is reflective of the values they live by, day to day. Very serious, very humorous as well. WHEN YOU MEET FOLKS YOU ADMIRE AND THE RESPECT IS MUTUAL, THAT’S A GOOD THING.  Ultimately Stic, M-I, Umi and Mike Flo had a blast and thanked Global Family and Portland for the best time they’ve had in the Northwest.
